How does debt consolidation work, step by step

Debt consolidation swaps several debts for one: a new loan or plan pays the old balances, and you repay only the new one. Here is each step in order.

The short answer to how does debt consolidation work is simple. One fixed-rate loan at the 11.9% bank average pays off every card (Federal Reserve). Cards average 22.36% at the same banks.

The first thing to do is call a specialist. Here are the steps they walk you through, with your card statements in hand.

Step by step: how does debt consolidation work

David had $18,000 spread across three cards, and he made six moves in this order.

First, he added up every balance. Second, he compared lenders that offer one fixed-rate loan. Third, he applied online and got a decision in minutes.

Fourth, he gave the lender his card account numbers. Fifth, his cards hit zero about a week after he applied. Sixth, he now pays $473 a month for four years at the 11.9% bank average.

  1. Call a specialist and add up every balance and its rate together.
  2. Check your credit score and your debt-to-income number.
  3. Get rate quotes from two or three lenders.
  4. Compare the offers on rate, fee and term.
  5. Accept one, and have the cards paid off the day the money lands.
  6. Keep the cards open but empty, and put the new payment on autopay.

Who pays your old debts

Either you or the lender. Several lenders send the money straight to your card companies once you give them the account numbers.

LightStream and Discover both describe direct payment on their own pages (LightStream). Other lenders put the cash in your checking account, and you pay the cards yourself.

If the money comes to you, pay every card the day it arrives. The CFPB is blunt about the risk. The new loan plus the old cards is more debt, not less.

How long it takes

Applying and getting a decision happen online in minutes. Getting the money takes a day to a few days.

LightStream says it can fund the loan the same day you apply. Upstart says its funds can arrive in as little as 1 day.

Wells Fargo says 97% of its customers got funds the day they signed, from April to June 2026 (Wells Fargo).

Card payments take two to five days to post after that. So your cards can still show a balance for most of a week. Check each card online until it reads zero.

What your credit does

A full application can add a hard inquiry and a new account to the report. Paying your cards down changes the balances they report.

Plan as if each personal loan application counts as its own pull. The specialist on our line helps you pick before you apply.

Mistakes to avoid

The first error is running the cards back up after they hit zero. The second is picking a longer term than you need just so the payment looks small.

The third is closing the paid-off cards, which shrinks your available credit.

Watch the loan fee too. Some lenders charge a fee over 5%, and that fee can eat part of what you save. The specialist compares no-fee lenders with your cards before you sign.

Last, make your first loan payment on time, even while old card autopays still run. Being more than 60 days late on a card lets that card company raise the rate on all balances (CFPB).

Is it better to pay off my credit card debt or consolidate it?

If you can clear the cards in under a year at your current payments, pay them off and skip the loan. If it would take years, a loan at a lower rate ends the debt sooner and for less. The debt payoff calculator shows both paths.

What disqualifies you from debt consolidation?

Each lender sets its own rules for credit, income and the debts you already have. No single 50% debt-to-income cutoff applies to every lender. Wells Fargo requires you to be a customer for 12 months before you apply.

How long will it take to pay off $20,000 in credit card debt?

Paying $600 a month at 22.36% takes about 53 months. A four-year loan at 11.9% costs about $526 a month and ends in 48 months.

How much is the payment on a $50,000 consolidation loan?

It comes to about $1,110 a month over five years at 11.9%, before any fee. LightStream, Wells Fargo, Upstart and SoFi publish loan ranges that cover $50,000. A lender’s top amount is not a promise of approval.
