Payday loan consolidation: getting out of the cycle
Payday loan consolidation replaces loans that roll over every payday with one payment you can finish. Here are three ways to do it and what each costs.

Payday loan consolidation moves you from almost 400% APR (CFPB) to a loan that costs 28% or less (NCUA). Your payday loan comes due in full on your next payday. Each rollover brings the fee back.
The first thing to do is call a specialist. Here are the options they walk you through.
Why payday loans trap people
This kind of borrowing is generally $500 or less, and it comes due in full on your next paycheck (CFPB). When your paycheck cannot cover both the loan and the rent, the loan rolls over for another fee.
Chris has three payday loans that total $1,400. He pays $210 in fees every two weeks. That adds up to $5,460 a year on $1,400 of debt.
So Chris pays more in fees each year than he owes. By comparison, credit card APRs run about 12 to 30 percent.
Add up the fees on your own loans for the last two weeks.
Way one: a payday loan consolidation loan
A credit union is the strongest first stop. The NCUA caps a federal credit union’s payday alternative loan at 28% (NCUA).
That loan, or a small personal loan, pays off all three of Chris’s lenders. He gets months to repay instead of two weeks.
Spread over 12 months at 28%, his $1,400 costs about $135 a month. So Chris trades $210 every two weeks for one payment of about $135 a month.
Online lenders we review start at $1,000, and they price weaker credit near 36%. A smaller payday balance fits a credit union loan better. Call and the specialist compares both with your loans.
Way two: a payment program
A nonprofit credit counselor on the Department of Justice list can add payday loans to a debt management plan. The agency works out terms with each lender, and Chris then makes one payment.
A plan can take 48 months or more (FTC). The specialist on our line walks you through a debt management plan on the call.
Way three: an extended payment plan
Many states require payday lenders to give you more time at no extra cost when you request it before the due date. The specialist on our line walks you through the request and what else to try.
Chris requested more time from all three of his lenders, and two agreed.
A new rule took effect March 30, 2025. After two failed withdrawal attempts in a row, a payday lender needs your new permission to try your bank account again (CFPB).
What each costs
Over a year, the 28% credit union loan adds about $221 in interest for Chris. The debt management plan has a small monthly fee. The extended payment plan adds nothing in the states that require it.
All three end the rollovers that cost Chris $5,460 a year.
Programs that take payday debt
Three kinds of help accept these small loans. Nonprofit counselors on the Department of Justice list can set up a plan. Credit unions offer payday alternative loans.
Servicemembers have the Military Lending Act, which caps payday and other consumer loans at 36% (CFPB). Settlement companies rarely take payday loans because the balances are small.

Before you borrow
Can I consolidate my payday loans into one monthly payment?
Yes. A credit union payday alternative loan is capped at 28%, and a small personal loan or a nonprofit debt management plan also works. All three turn two-week fees into one monthly payment.
What happens if I can’t pay my payday loan?
Many states require an extended payment plan at no extra cost when you request it before the due date. Call and the specialist walks you through the request. If the lender refuses, a nonprofit debt management plan can cover the loan.
Does debt consolidation work on payday loans?
It works better on payday loans than on almost anything else. The rate gap is very wide, from almost 400% APR down to 28% or less.
Can you get debt relief for payday loans?
Yes, through a nonprofit debt management plan. Settlement companies rarely take payday loans. Servicemembers have the 36% Military Lending Act cap on their side.
